M WOODS is excited to announce a presentation in early 2022 of Salman Toor! This will be the Pakistan born, New York based artist’s first museum solo exhibition in Asia.
For this exhibition that will be held at M WOODS 798, Toor will work closely with Artistic Director Victor Wang to develop an ambitious solo show of new oil paintings and works on paper.

About the artist:
Salman Toor was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1983, and currently lives and works in New York City. Toor’s sumptuous and insightful figurative paintings depict fictional lives of queer brown men navigating cosmopolitan culture, touching on themes of art history and colonialism. Salman Toor: How Will I Know, the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition, was recently presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York from November 13, 2020 – April 4, 2021. His work is in the permanent collections of M Woods, Beijing; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Tate, London, UK; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and RISD Museum, Providence, among other institutions.
From Salman Toor:
“I’m excited and honored to be showing at M Woods!” says Toor. “In the new body of work that I am preparing to present in China, I am exploring narratives of self-love and the perception of difference as a conversation among the cultures of the Global South. I look forward to sharing it with the museum’s audience.”
From Victor Wang:
This exhibition is important for the museum for so many reasons. As Salman Toor’s first solo museum exhibition in the country, we hope to continue and support the important discussions his work raises: especially around how we locate the spaces of contact between the constitution of a modern and contemporary western art history with that of the ‘non-west’. But also importantly, to think about love - reorganizing previous categories that surround intimacy to stimulate discussions with our audiences here in Beijing.
