[About the Exhibition]

Since the late 1970s, Ryuichi Sakamoto has played a key role in redefining the intersection between sound and art in Japan and internationally. From his cinematic scores, for which he was awarded both an Oscar and a Grammy in 1988, and his influence on the development of electronic music through the Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) to his current activist work on climate change, Sakamoto continues to radically transform the way we think about creative practice and the potential of art and music.

From March 15th to August 8th 2021, M WOODS is holding the largest and most comprehensive survey exhibition to date devoted to musician and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto. This exhibition is Sakamoto's first institutional solo show in China. It includes works in various media in collaboration with fellow celebrated artists from the last thirty years and new site-specific installations made especially for M WOODS.

[About the Catalogue]

Ryuichi Sakamoto: seeing sound, hearing time is published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name currently on view at M WOODS (Hutong). This bilingual catalogue in Chinese and English is produced by M WOODS, designed by Studio NA.EO, managed by Post Wave Publishing Consulting (Beijing), and published by Beijing United Publishing. It contains prefaces written by both Ryuichi Sakamoto and the founder of M WOODS, three scholarly essays written by curators Sachiko Namba, Victor Wang and Zhang Youdai, and close to 100 high-resolution installation images of the exhibited artworks. As Ryuichi Sakamoto's first catalogue in China and most comprehensive one focusing on his art, this publication also focuses on the artist's contribution to sound and visual arts and surveys his music and art careers in the past fifty years. It provides the audience with precious visual and literal archival materials that would make possible a comprehensive overview of the artist's creative journey.

[Design Concept]

Against silver and white geometric patterns, texts seem to scatter, guided by a certain logic, like waves building traces of water while leaving gravel randomly on the beach. "When the sea hits hard on the piano, it is out of tune for humans, but really, it is just restoring it to its natural state..." Stemming from Sakamoto's account, we think that maybe we should also bring words and images back to "nature", and that texts "scattered on a piece of paper" may also come across as a form of "the original state". From this and Sakamoto's guidance on simplicity, we have come up with the design of this exhibition catalogue. — Studio NA.EO.
